Founded in the 9th century by Emir Mohamed I, its original name was Mayrit, meaning “place of abundant waters.” Most of the Islamic architecture was built over after the Christian conquest, but the “soul” of the city remains in these spots:

The Arab Wall (Muralla Árabe): Located in the Emir Mohamed I Park (near the Almudena Cathedral), you can see the best-preserved section of the original 9th-century fortress walls.

The Morería Neighborhood: Located in what is now La Latina, this was the district where the Muslim population lived. The winding, narrow streets around Plaza de la Morería still follow the original medieval layout.

Mudejar Towers: Look at the bell towers of San Nicolás de los Servitas and San Pedro el Viejo. These were built by Muslim craftsmen (Mudéjares) and feature the signature brickwork and horseshoe arches.

The San Isidro Museum: This museum houses the best archaeological collection of Madrid’s Islamic origins, including ceramics and daily life artifacts.

🚶 Walking Directions — From Universidad Carlos III de Madrid | Puerta de Toledo to Casa Árabe

Distance: ~2.5 km
Time: ~30–35 minutes

From the Puerta de Toledo campus, walk northeast toward the city center via Calle de Toledo and central Madrid.
